What TV show is your foundation?
Joss Whedon's Slayerverse. This would be 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' and 'Angel'.

I hear that Low Tide is linked to the other two games (Birthright and City Limits). What's that about?
Once upon a time, there was a small town in Nevada called Searchlight. It had a really cool, isolated vibe about it, but was within driving distance of Las Vegas. We inserted some original characters based in the continuity of certain television shows (Buffy and Angel), set it in 2008, and had some truly fantastic interaction and writing, which lasted for, in real-time, 4 years! This successful writing project was called Birthright. But after so long in that setting, we felt the need for a new chapter and decided to end that incarnation.

Because we wanted it to go out with a bang, we had the world, at large, find out about the supernatural and tied up most of the creative loose ends which had been flapping in the proverbial wind. When the sequel came about, City Limits, we kept within this philosophy, setting it in Chicago and based it 1 year later, in a world which was now culturally aware of the truth behind all matters occult. After 1 year, this, too, came to a natural end. Part of that was due to feeling that the isolationist, 'Tremors'-like atmosphere of Birthright was no longer there to give us the same level of creativity. Having to take more and more account of larger world events in a completely fictional year of 2014 didn't help and we decided to go out on a high note, while we still could. Each of us gave our respective characters the sort of conclusions we felt they deserved. The writers went on to other projects, but kept in touch.

After 4 months, however, the itch to write together proved too great! Now, with an idea which allows us to return to our initial, somehow tremendously inspiring formula, we're back with an Alternate Universe (AU) story!

Don't worry, you don't have to know what happened in the former games. Some of the characters that transfer into Low Tide won't even have their old memories! This is a partial reset, perfect for those of you who want to leap into a game setting with a strong and imaginative framework. We also welcome those writers who are new to Buffy and Angel.

Do you take account of events from the canon comic series (Buffy season 8, Angel season 6, etc.)?
We veer away from those, as certain elements within them stifle our creativity. We are canon only through 'Chosen' and 'Not Fade Away', the series finales of those TV shows. In case you're wondering, L.A. was saved by a last-minute intervention on behalf of the Powers That Be, while the public, at large, has no reason to think that supernatural creatures exist, much less adore vampires and hate all Slayers.

When and where are you set?
We are set in the 'here and now', starting from November 14, 2009 (when the game opens).

What kind of characters can I play?
So long as they don't contradict the established way the Slayerverse was portrayed, we're happy to listen to any new ideas! Let your creativity flow. Obviously, vampires and Slayers will be popular, but 'normal', mundane human characters can often be just as interesting!

Why Key West, Florida?
Our first game was set in Las Vegas. Our second was in Chicago. We felt it would make for a nice change of thematic pace to have this one set in a tropical area. We also wanted somewhere connected to the mainland, as the majority of applied characters tend to have US origins. Florida allows writers an easy way to familiarise themselves with the culture and so on (there are many online resources for Key West and it's well-covered by Google Earth). Key West allows diversity in culture, socio-economic status, family background, religion, etc. and has a thriving night life! It's also a close-knit community with an influx of tourists (or, as we prefer to think of them, canon fodder).

How do characters interact?
For the moment, we're keeping it to third-person scenes (written in past tense, please) and first-person journal entries. The latter will not be considered 'on-line' at the start of the game. However, online journal-based interaction is a possibility which is under discussion for the future... This will depend greatly on the demand for it from our present writers.

What's happening to the original characters from Birthright and City Limits?
Their stories concluded, from their perspectives, in 2014. Their own 'world' shall continue undisturbed, and their epilogues remain intact. They do, however, have 'doubles' (doppelgangers) who exist in the separate reality of Low Tide... Perhaps their lives only differed in small ways? For some of them, major. That's up to you!

There are 2 options for bringing Birthright and City Limits characters into Low Tide. If you're a former writer of those games, you may choose which method works best for you. All of our characters' doppelgangers in Low Tide will have dreams urging them to go to a certain beach (Fort Taylor in Key West, Florida) and walk as far out to the water's edge as possible. For obvious reasons, this would lead them to go there at low tide. Only some of them will follow that urge...

For Those That Don't: You'll simply write the doppelganger of your Birthright or City Limits character from scratch. Remember that the year is 2009 in Low Tide, which may change things a bit for your character's backstory. You can use this as an opportunity to alter your original character's template and write them as if they had followed a completely different path.

For Those That Do: Little do they know it, but walking into the water leads them to the location of an ancient relic, buried just under the sand... Once they get close enough, the memories and elements of personality from their otherworldly selves will zap into them (from Birthright and City Limits). Effectively, this makes them identical to the characters you left behind in Birthright and City Limits... except they'll find themselves in bodies that are 5 years younger, in a world that's almost entirely identical to the one they left. They'll be a little disoriented after this and wander off in a daze.

This will not give them 2 complete sets of memories, or warring personalities, or anything of that nature. They will retain only dream-like memories of who their doppelgangers were in the Low Tide reality before they took over (i.e. flashbacks, bits of factual knowledge like where they live, how to access to bank accounts and so on). Their 'copied' personalities from the Birthright and City Limits reality will feel like the legitimate ones.

Special Note: If you transfer the memories of a character over, that's all that comes with them! The Birthright and City Limits reality continues on (with them in tow)! For this reason, there's no going back.

I had a previous character in Birthright or City Limits - can I automatically bypass the application process?
Those characters that are largely the same are automatically accepted. Those who have obvious differences in their histories and/or personalities should be submitted to the moderators for approval (a link to their journal profiles is fine).

What's going to happen with the relic?
It's our custom plot device of indeterminate origin! It's also too large, heavy and deeply buried for any one character to single-handedly locate, realise it might be something they want, set about uncovering and be able to drag out of extremely wet sand before the tide starts to creep back in. We specifically want it to be as ambiguous as possible. It doesn't have to be evil! It could even be good! It'll be our way to make random fun stuff happen. :)

What about a totally new character?
These are welcome! You will not be alone in creating new characters. Many of the writers from the last 2 games are choosing to begin with a blank slate. Your character will be refreshing, like a twist of lemon.

Why would my totally new character go to Key West?
Other than its innate tourist appeal, some supernatural characters might feel a vague impulse to visit the area (so as to explain why so many such characters are arriving). If we absolutely need a behind-the-scenes explanation for that, then this could be why.

What is the Low Tide alternate universe like?
Just like Earth as we know it in 2009 (except, of course, with an underground of slayers, vampires, etc.). When we call it an AU, we really just mean it's on a different timeline and path as Birthright and City Limits, our former games. Very few people have knowledge of supernatural elements that exist.

What if I never watched Buffy or Angel?
Shame on you! ;) Just kidding. That's fine. As long as you familiarize yourself with the 'supernatural lore' (i.e. what it means to be a vampire, etc.) and follow it, everything is fine. We have very few characters from Buffy and Angel in this game... We just stole the concept.

I watched Buffy and Angel. Where are all the characters I remember?
By intentional design, this community is focused on original characters. We will consider applications for canon characters (those on the TV shows), too, if they're of high quality.
