Inquisitors
History Founded July 10,1890 (our storyline began on June 22, 1891). Very few original members remain.
Connection to Whitechapel Murders During the initial investigations into the Whitechapel murders, it was determined that the killings were of an occult nature (because of ritualistic incisions, organ theft), and were designed to lead up to a ceremony. The queen formed the Royal Inquisition to hunt 'Jack the Ripper'. The fledgling organization intervened before the final stages (February 1891). The identity of 'Jack' is only known by the Grand Inquisitor (an NPC character). The original Inquisitors working the case were killed during the investigation.
Types of Inquisitors Field inquisitors (hunters, spys), scientists, weapons experts, religious figures, historians, medical personnel. There are also paid informants to the Inquisition. A supernaturally-gifted human may be approached for that role if considered a valid source of assistance. If an Inquisitor has built up a relationship of trust with them, they may be brought onto the payroll as a resource (though not as an Inquisitor). In most cases, they would know only that they're being paid by 'the crown' because of the secretive nature of the organization.
Organizational Structure Tier 1: Apprentice. These are new recruits that undergo trials and an intiation, once an Inquisitor has vouched for them. An apprentice has an 'advocate' within the organization.

Tier 2: Inquisitor

Tier 3: Grand Inquisitor. This is a leadership role. Reports directly to the crown.
Training and Initiation Recruitment into the Inquisition is not taken lightly. A candidate would be identified by an Inquisitor and investigated to make sure they're of appropriate calibre (ex. mentally stable, generally law-abiding, human, brings a useful skill; all social classes might be tapped for recruitment, but good breeding or social standing is a plus).

Once the person is identified, they'd be met with privately and informed generally of the group's existence (not by name, not by location; they would simply know the group answers to the crown). If they join, they enter training as an Apprentice. During training, an Apprentice shadows their Advocate until the Advocate feels they're ready. This process might stretch for weeks or a few months, if the Apprentice is a true novice and hopes to become a field Inquisitor (hunter, spy). On the other hand, it would be relatively brief for a scientist, religious figure, doctor, or a candidate with prior hunting experience. The Advocate sets a test of his or her choosing, tailored to what the Apprentice most needs to overcome (mental or physical challenges). The Apprentice would not realise they are undergoing the test, so as to make it a true trial.

The training includes a variety of topics, including occult history, weapons, hand-to-hand combat, tracking, conducting investigations, law, social etiquette, and a moral code of behavior befitting people under the Queen's employ. The training is not held onboard the HMS Whitechapel. At the conclusion of the training, an initiation is held. It includes a sworn oath to serve the queen and honor the Royal Inquisition. Afterwards, the new Inquisitor is informed of the organization's name, their title, and the location of its headquarters. They are presented with a medallion.
Headquarters HMS Whitechapel- A steam-powered ship moored in the Thames, serving the dual purpose of residence and headquarters. Most Inquisitors live here (all weapons must be stored here). Guarded by Inquisitors in shifts and dogs. Contains living quarters, fully-working laboratory and workshop (powered by the ship's boilers). It's metal, capable of crossing the Atlantic, has funnels for steam, and... Well, imagine a much smaller version of the Titanic. It gives th Inquisition a mobile base of operations, a residence, and is easier to guard than a house. Visual Inspiration
Strengths Field Inquisitors are exceptionally well-armed and trained. They are also disciplined and knowledgeable about the occult. They can take legal control of areas 'in defense of the realm' by stating 'by royal order of the queen' and displaying a pendant.
Weaknesses Human. Mortal. Regular strength, healing, and agility.
Mentality They are often aristocratic. They embody Victorian ideals to varying degrees. They are likely to consider a dhampir or other supernaturally-gifted human tainted. At the outset of the game, they are more focused on killing non-human creatures (ex. werewolves, vampires, dhampirs, demons, etc). They might capture some creatures in small numbers for research purposes, but it isn't high on their list of priorities. A supernaturally-gifted human would only be hunted or killed if they were viewed as a serious threat (this is not done lightly).
Appearance There are more men than women (but both are allowed). Human. There is no uniform (regular, gender-appropriate Victorian garb is worn). Wear a necklace (the pendant is a silver, round medallion with engraving of royal insignia: a crown and crossed swords). If going into combat, will be outfitted with metal breastplates or light-weight leather armor and weaponry.
Technology 1891: Crude automatic firing guns/crossbows, single-fire concealable guns. Gadgets that can propel fire, liquids such as holy water. Small, wearable, functional gear with cogs, wheels, tanks, gauges. Powered by steam and/or small electrical currents. Parts made of leather, brass, wood, iron. Re-breathing apparatus for water/altitudes. Primitive circular saws. Balloons for air transport. Water cannons. Ways to capture/restrain vampire 'mists', ghosts, etc. by means of vast Tesla coils in laboratory. Nets. Gunpowder and various corrosive chemicals.

Later in the Game: Primitive electro-shock weapons, automobiles
Relationship to Law Enforcement Most cases of human crimes will be investigated first by police. If the reports turn up unusual elements, the Inquisition will conduct a parallel investigation (which may include going through evidence, inspecting the scene, interrogating witnesses, etc.). They will not identify themselves by full name or by organization, but rather as working for the crown.
