The smell in the room was only slightly dissipated by an open window barred in the front with thick wrought iron spokes.

I like the opening plot for Alec's healing abilities. It's interesting to show how Alec, who doesn't know he can heal people, could accidentally hurt himself. Also a good metaphor for most helping professionals, who often invest so much of themselves into their cases that they get hurt in the process.
