This is a collection of our 'City Limits Rewind: Writers That Rocked' segments. It's a routine rewards system we use to congratulate one another on a job well done. This replaced our system of monthly awards because it eliminated competition and gave us a low-key way of patting one another on the back.
*** For Mar. 16, 2009 ***
For All Participating Characters
For amusing randomness (including Star's quite naughty response!)
Chicago Underground- Demon Pants:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/212170.htmlFor Kate
Writer 1: Darian, for showing his... Needy side (and calling Ralphael "that piece of shit assistant of hers", which deserves to be immortalised)
Writer 2: The intricacies of a character are never more evident than when we pull a reversal like this; for the change to be so obvious with the use of two simple words - the greeting - just goes to show what a well-rounded and well-written character Darian is.
"Oh. Hey." The informality of his speech was notable, but rather than seeming casual with her, he just looked despondent.
Basket Case:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/215345.htmlFor Jessica and Jeff
Avery, for lashing out and Thea, for her awesomely B-movie-like last verbal response
If It's a Fight You're Looking For:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/216445.htmlFor Paul and Kate
Writer 1: Rhiannon and Deanna, for being interestingly philosophical.
Writer 2: Loved this scene for the chemistry beween the two characters, and of course the dialogue.
Writer 3: I thought this was a creative way to have two enemies converse without leading to fisticuffs.
Enemy Mine:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/217406.htmlFor Willow and Mands
Alec and Toby, for the creatively subtle use of homoerotic undertones
Postive Outlook:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/220207.htmlFor RJ:
What a conniving little liar-head! :)
Follow-Up:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/223090.htmlFor Mands and Kate
Rhiannon and Kris, for managing to make the dream of a City Limits version of 'West Side Story' almost a reality
Roadside Damsels in Distress?:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/222082.htmlFor Dew
This paragraph is so disturbingly descriptive that I can totally picture the scene. Nicely done.
Bonnie Lindstrom’s body was bloated and discolored, floating in a tub full of murky water polluted with blood and adipocere; her throat had been cut deep enough that had head hung back in the water like a broken Pez dispenser, the wound clotted with a wriggling mass of maggots. The smell in the room was only slightly dissipated by an open window barred in the front with thick wrought iron spokes.
187:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/211440.htmlFor Cathy
Amused me greatly. :)
Texts to Juliet:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/218749.html For Kate
Something about this line is very endearing.
"This morning, I woke up and I wanted to do everything," she said. "I wanted to surf enormous waves in Maui and dive off cliffs in Switzerland and run the bulls in Spain."
A New Trajectory:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/223293.htmlFor Jeff:
What an interesting description of Elise!
"I told Avery to let Hayden and Rhi know I'm okay," Faith said with a single nod, leaning forward and glancing over her shoulder. "And funny you should mention lawyer ... Wolfram & Hart sent one of their little bitches to offer me council last week. Pale as Elmer's, dead eyes for miles ... think her name was Elise.
Conversation Through Glass:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/221317.htmlFor E
It's great when you pen articles like these.
Opening 'Chernobyl Park':
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/220661.htmlFor Kate
This is hilarious when imagined in my head.
It was the bejeweled Treasure Troll in her hand that identified her as 'Pixie Strumpet'. Getting up her gumption, Hannah cleared her throat, a soft but insistent little, "Uh...uhh!" and held the pink-haired figurine aloft. "Bueller?"
Sugar Addicts:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/219775.htmlFor Jeff
For being open to new and possibly dangerous plot and scene ideas.
For Cathy
VERY cool slayer dream, lady!
Sleeping:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/212584.htmlFor Jessica and Kate:
I like how the personality plot has affected Avery and Francess -- they're still adorable together, but there's an added edge now.
A New Trajectory:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/223293.htmlFor RJ
Thanks for offering an interesting subplot in the whole Faith situation.
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/223090.htmland
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/219225.htmlFor Cathy and Kate
Because this, this just made me crack up. It caused some concern on my muse's behalf but her mun? Was loving it. :)
Basket Case:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/215345.htmlFor RJ:
Nice plot for Kathleen!
Not This Time:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/220721.htmlFor Ashlie and Kate
I got hungry reading that scene. I really enjoyed reading it.
Spy Games:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/208407.htmlFor Jessica:
You have a gift for great description in narrative.
The place was death. A finger ran over the windowsill, a trail drawn into the dust. Open the fridge, nothing there but the hum of the motor and the single bulb. An ancient box of baking soda in the very back. The hybrid straightened, the appliance still open, light spilling out onto the tiled floor.
The Socrates Bit:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/218385.htmlFor E and Willow
Ooooh, this was a sexay scene! (PS- Star is throwing a tantrum)
Predators and Prey:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/214052.htmlFor Mands
Thank you for the fun time writing the pool craziness!
The Deep End:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/210250.htmlFor Tim and Jeff
This scene made me 'WTFBBQ?!" and frown in sadness. That means you're doing something right!
Unavoidable:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/220972.htmlFor Mands and Willow
Naughty, naughty! ;)
A Night to Remember (parts 1 and 2):
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/222376.html*** For Mar. 2, 2009 ***
For Jessica and Kate:
I really like the dynamic between Avery and Francess; it's really quite adorable and often humorous.
C'est La Vie:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/206802.htmlFor Jeff and Jessica:
Oh, Jill, see what happens when you try to be a do-gooder? And Warner... good show with the faux-angst!
From Your Lips to God's Ears
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/204121.htmlFor Willow and Stargazer:
I liked this scene. It had some cute/sweet moments.
Foraging for Food:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/205025.htmlFor Kate:
Writer 1: Love the poem Rhiannon wrote about her dream of Autumn. Good job!
Writer 2: Sad but powerful imagery.
Writer 3: This was so very different from the usual format that I enjoyed the change and the way it read more like a poem than an actual story.
Somewhere in Kansas:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/202506.htmlFor Carley and Jeff:
The dialogue and book titles in this scene amused the hell out of me.
The 9th Gra'naak Dimension And You - All You Need To Know About Jumping The Portal.
What To Do When You Fuck Up Your Magic Spell - A Beginner's Guide To Vegetative Brain Matter.
A Demon Walks Into a Bookstore:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/206979.htmlFor Dew and Jeff:
Made of awesome!
Definite Homicide
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/205471.htmlFor Stargazer and Kate:
Writer 1: Loved the tension in this scene.
Writer 2: With Kate and Stargazer's narration, I could really visualize the demon-fighting arena and imagine the atmosphere inside.
Like Them:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/206085.htmlFor E:
A funny little one-off.
Pornographic Non-Adaptation:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/203891.htmlFor Willow:
Okay, I realize this is a serious scene and situation, but I LOL'd at this narrative. Blame the yelp.
Toby he skidded to his feet and moved towards the bathroom, pushing the door open. When he saw his housemate on the floor, he let out an involuntary - and kind of girly - yelp and rushed to his side, feeling for a pulse and glancing in the toilet, feeling his stomach lurch."
...and later...
"Oh God yes," Toby rushed forward and flushed the toilet as soon as the woman had taken a sample, quickly washing his hands and drying them off quickly before he frowned.
Pride Cometh Before a Fall:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/203064.htmlFor Stargazer:
Because it's exceptionally interesting that Connor's finding himself jealous of Avery's situation! An ironic situation.
Friends of a Sort:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/203650.htmlFor Jessica:
The typo on the business card was funny. :)
Labyrinthine:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/207525.htmlFor RJ:
Applause for the creativity of your character's dream!
Dreaming Reflections:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/209149.htmlFor Cast:
I'd like to give a shout-out to all those who participated in the forum with their characters, and the mods for coming up with the concept. Hope to see more of the forum in the future.
Chicago Underground- WTF is this shit?:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/200579.htmlFor Jessica:
I don't know what it was, but there was something about this particular string of sentences that really struck a cord with me.
Making his way to the front of the church, he dug around deep in his memories. They were like dusty treasures, musty relics of a time when he could feel acutely. He'd need them, if he was to be convincing.
From Your Lips to God's Ears
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/204121.htmlFor Mands:
I like the opening plot for Alec's healing abilities. It's interesting to show how Alec, who doesn't know he can heal people, could accidentally hurt himself. Also a good metaphor for most helping professionals, who often invest so much of themselves into their cases that they get hurt in the process.
*** For Feb. 16, 2009 ***
For Dew
I was really tickled by this line, definitely going on my quotable list. I thought it was really clever, because in a way, it's almost like she's talking about herself.
“So, any word on the pretty little psychopath?” Elise asked cheerfully.
A Little Havoc:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/189180.htmlFor Kate
Writer 1: Oh, boy, this little tidbit (so to speak):
Hannah: "As a sausage, I lean a little to the left."
Writer 2: This line had me laughing so hard I cried.
"12:22pm... Despite protesting over the outrageous indignity, I am transformed into a pork product. My face pokes out of the side. As a sausage, I lean a little to the left."
Say It Aint So:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/193812.htmlFor RJ
This reminded me of HGTV.
"'I do like this granite top,” Kathleen glided her hand across the smooth surface of the open breakfast bar. She surveyed the modern kitchen with its stainless steel appliances, and cherry cabinets."
Apartment 12-C:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/195891.htmlFor Paul and Kate
A great reunion (Hannah and Whistler)
Order Up:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/187016.htmlFor Cathy
I want to give you a shout-out for having Juliet be so inquisitive!
19 Questions:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/189543.html?
For Mands
Really enjoying reading about what Alec's going through with the illness and everything -- compelling stuff.
For Jessica and Stargazer:
I absolutely loved this whole storyline and how it's developed with Avery, and the inclusion of someone from his past made it all the more real. I completely fell into this scene (and storyline) with its twists and turns. All the NPC characters are believable, too, which made it an incredibly enjoyable - and intense - read.
Live:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/194698.htmlFor Claire
Gavin's letter to his father was a sweet insight into his conflict over Rose.
Dead Letters:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/190863.htmlFor Mands
Loving the depth and detail of this storyline as Alec is discovering his powers. It's nice to see that they're really taking their toll and kicking his ass. Makes them a lot more realistic and really feel for Alec because he doesn't understand what's going on. Excited (and bloody terrified for Alec's sake) to see where this is going next.
Fallen:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/195618.htmlFor Kate
This scene really left my mouth open at the end, I truly didn't expect that, amazing!
Ruby Red:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/191526.htmlFor Jeff
I really respect your commitment to personal story lines for your characters. It requires a huge amount of time and energy to do those NPCs and long solos, especially the flashbacks. Good job, dude. :)
For E
Doll, you always keep me on my toes! Thanks for Katherine's rocking-ass fight skills. This was so much fun!
The One Where They Kick The Shit Out of Each Other:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/189808.htmlFor Jessica
This line by Avery made me feel kind of proud of him for saying something back to Grace.
Instead, the vampire looked down at her, at the aplomb with which she presented this 'lesson' to him. "What were you? I mean, before you were a vampire. A motivational speaker to the Fuhrer?"
Everywhere You Go, There You Are:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/195471.html*** For Feb. 2, 2009 ***
For Jeff
Writer 1: This is awesome, my friend. :)
Writer 2: Really really well written. Showed an interesting angle on the whole Avery working vampire thing
Hired a Vampire? You Might Be Worse Than a Terrorist:
For E and Cathy
There's a tremendous delicacy of language here. I loved it!
Famous? Or Fanged?!
For Stargazer and Kate
Writer 1: I thought this was a really good scene. :)
Writer 2: A friendship that seems real and dynamic (Rhiannon/Connor).
Kind-of a Mess:
For Dew and Willow
A good scene between the two characters! Also, David's swearing was amusing. :)
Absolution:
For Kate and Claire
The continued unique chemistry between Gavin/Rose.
For Kate
This cracked me up, it really did. Poor poor Hannah, stuck in the life of a waitress/sex worker.
There's Something About Carrie:
For RJ
There was just something about this line that amused me and made me think that humans have some kind of mace for vampires now. ;)
<i>Jeb walked to take his coat out of the closet. "Hey bring your video camera, and I'll bring the vamp repellent."</i>
Neat:
For Mands and Jeff
Nice to see two people going to town on each other and actually meaning it. The writing on this scene from both Jeff and Mands was awesome.
For Jessica
This is a great plot arc! It strikes the right chords.
The Past Rises Up to Meet Us:
For Claire
You bring out something special in my writing. Thanks for challenging me to be so creative! I loved this mini-plot.
Dream a Little Dream:
*** Jan. 19, 2009 ***

Writer 1: Haunting and sad, but also frightening.
Writer 2: Way to show the rest of us up. ;)
Writer 3: Such a great, creepy scene.

Hooray for the return of Hannah, easily one of the most lovable characters we have ever known, and always a welcome addition to Kate's cadre of amazingly charismatic and well written muses.
Hannah's appearance was a very nice and unexpected surprise.
The Replacement:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/163663.html
Much love to Kate for this line:
"The cigarette burned itself into oblivion while she stood there, trying to figure out when the world became the size of her closet."
Old School:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/164339.html
For Paul
Great quote.
"I've been around for well over two hundred fucking years! What are they gonna do," she grabbed her silver cigarette case and took out the last smoke. Her ashtray was a hotbed of anger, "dig up the bloody bodies and carbon-date them?"
Just the Facts, Ma'am.:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/154746.html?mode=reply
For the way Deanna oozes malicious sexuality, even through a phone line. LOVE!
The Book Deal:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/166656.html
For Stargazer
I'd like to give kudos to Stargazer for writing a character I honestly don't like in such a way that I empathize with him (Connor). :)
For this solo, which communicated with such easy how Connor must feel.
The Iceman Cometh:

http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/145782.html For Jessica
Kudos for this line, it cracked me up!
"Greg jabbed one finger down on the counter, tearing a piece of the comics page. "Vampire. It's indecent, you know, especially with the unemployment rate being what it is. First you suck us dry and then you steal our jobs? Not in Chicago, you don't. Not in America."
Jig Is Up:
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/city_limits/144944.html For Kate
A line that had me laugh hard was from the scene 'On a Date'
"Huh-hooooo, I think so!" Rhiannon said, tapping her palm on the bar. "I think maybe you've gone soft on me. Next thing we know, you're gonna be ordering yourself a Fuzzy Navel, and I'm gonna have to slide a stool down <I>that</i> way." She pointed towards the other end of the bar, where a couple of men were downing drinks like prohibition was coming back next week.
