What is the objective of Project Integration?
To exert government control over the supernatural world, this time through co-operation with supernatural beings. To put supernatural beings on a national registry and track their movements (electronic monitoring; a small microchip implanted beneath the skin). To recruit demon fighters and others of supernatural abilities as Special Agents (even demons, if they do their jobs and are relatively well-behaved). To capture any supernaturals who resist registering or aiding Project Integration.

Who runs Project Integration?
The program was developed by the Executive branch of the US government (the President, elected in 2008, up for re-election in 2012). It acknowledges that the FBI, NSA and various other agencies, including the defunct Initiative, have information on the supernatural. It requires them to disclose information to the newly formed Project Integration team, which is made of Agents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Highly-classified knowledge.

Who are the Agents?
Through an NPC scene, two NPC Agents (Dahlia Rimes and Jack Ballantine) have been identified. Others have been mentioned, such as Purvis, Suhovski and Sparrow. Writers may NPC other Agents, who will run Project Integration and try to capture supernaturals and recruit new Special Agents. They would most like to recruit 'white hats' but will bend the rules when necessary.

What kinds of divisions exist in Project Integration?
Prisoner Intake (interrogation, quarantine, prison), Training, Legal, Human Resources (for benefits), Medical, Recruitment, etcetera.

Where is Project Integration?
Headquarters are located in Clark County, Nevada (specifically, in the town of Henderon, just south of Las Vegas). The main facilities are located underground, beneath a mundane government office building.

What important terminology should I know?
Agents: Government employees who run Project Integration (brought in from DHS and FEMA).
Special Agents: New supernatural recruits.

Class 2 Illegal Aliens: Slayers, demons, half-breeds/hybrids, witches, werewolves, vampires... Who refuse to register (also referred to as rogues).

Class 2 Legal Aliens: Slayers, demons, half-breeds/hybrids, witches, werewolves, vampires... Who register and co-operate by becoming Special Agents or informants (also referred to as legals).

Class 2 Unlawful Citizens: Humans who are in-the-know about supernatural... Who refuse to co-operate.

Class 2 Lawful Citizens: Humans who are in-the-know about supernatural... Who co-operate.

(Class 1 would be regular 'illegal aliens'; human immigrants.)

What happens to those who agree to being registered or agree to cooperate?
They'll be implanted with a small tracking device in the wrist if they register with Project Integration. At the very least, they'll be asked to be informants on the supernatural world, including giving names/locations. At the most, they'll be recruited as Special Agents who will go out and recruit more folks or help capture rogues. This depends on their abilities. Being a Special Agent or informant gives them a steady paycheck, paid vacation, medical and retirement benefits for immediate family, a Federal badge, passport, access to free legal assistance, access to weapons and an extensive network of colleagues.

What happens to those who refuse to be recruited as informants or Special Agents?
They'll be labelled as rogues. If considered particularly knowledgeable or dangerous, they'll be hunted for capture. Once captured, they'll be interrogated. An attempt to recruit them will be made. If unsuccessful, they'll be jailed in maximum security at Project Integration. If particularly troublesome, they might be killed. While they're on the loose, they could find themselves without valid driver's licenses, with canceled credit cards, black-listed from certain kinds of employment, etcetera.

Is Project Integration evil?
Not intentionally. There are noble Agents who believe this is for the safety and betterment of society. There are malevolent Agents who use excessive force and don't mind blackmail. It's good in that it wants to integrate white hat supernaturals into a government policing system. It's evil in that it will inevitably encounter major difficulties and deal with them poorly. Also, it tramples on human rights issues and privacy.

Stages of Project Integration
Phase 1 (Partial Disclosure): This plot arc begins with a Presidential order for the FBI, NSA and others, to fully disclose all knowledge about the demonic world to the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA. As it stands, only certain special units (such as the defunct Initiative) of the government know. The administration spreads this knowledge because it believes the time has come to exert firm control over the 'supernatural problem'. It will be established that other countries are considering similar measures.

Phase 2 (Amnesty): This is where we are now. Project Integration Agents will offer amnesty to any slayer, demon hunter or person of supernatural capabilities who registers themselves and signs up to become a special agent. Some will be sent out to scout for supernaturals and get the word out. Others will just be informants, depending on their abilities. After the amnesty period passes, the remaining supernaturals who refuse to register and act as public servants would be considered a rogue threat to the general population, same as vampires. Basically that makes them outlaws or targets.

(We Need: Department of Homeland Security characters to tap the first recruits. Then Agents go out and begin spreading the world in the supernatural subculture.)

Phase 3 (Legal versus Rogue): Later... All Special Agents would be dispatched to fight against demons and 'rogues' (unregistered). They would be required to disclose information and also capture and bring in the other demonic beings, so that the government can control the problem. They would hope that these captives could be held accountable for the number of lives they have taken, reformed into 'legals' and sent out to hunt, or removed from the general population.

Phase 4 (Full Disclosure... Not intentional): Through a media leak, news of the supernatural is spread to the general public. Opponents of the operation will attempt to convince the populace that the idea of demonic beings is ludicrous, or that the President made the order in an election year and that it is a ploy to gain the current administration another term in office. One can imagine that chaos would ensue.

STATUS: Melinda and Gerald are deceased and only active in flashback; Cory is active.
NOTES: Melinda and Gerald adopted Cory after Samantha gave birth to him. Gerald returned Cory to his mother after Melinda was killed by a vampire. Gerald was killed by Grace, who - with Epimetheus' help - framed Samantha for the murder. The Watkins family is usually written by Jeff.

NAME: Devora
STATUS: Apparently residing in Russia.
NOTES: The demoness known only as Devora, is Sonya's mother. Seductive, bisexual, rude and as manipulative as she is highly materialistic, Devora possesses something of a cynical charm, all of her own. Does not get along, at all, with Sonya's human father and speaks distastefully of her daughter's human side, yet tries to coax the girl into following a darker path, by means of luxuries and virtually anything else she considers of use.

Physically, she has long, permed, blonde hair and a natural 'crown' of two rows of spikes; one on each side of her head. These are mostly hidden by the hair, but the sharp tips can be seen. Having the large, leathery, draconian wings inherited by her daughter, Devora also has a long, thin, prehensile tail, ending in a triangular 'arrow'. Her legs are tri-jointed, much like those of a satyr. Her feet, however, are taloned. Teeth are sharp, seeming to be exclusively fangs.

  • You'll need an InsaneJournal account for your character (must be different from your personal journal). As soon as you have one set up, please let us know the username and we'll give you access to free_form2 (our in-character community) and free_form_ooc (our out-of-character community).

  • Every writer should sign up for access to the Birthright Resource pages. Once signed up, writers will be granted editing access to help us maintain up-to-date game information!

  • Once you have posting and viewing access, please log in to free_form_ooc and post a brief introduction to yourself and your character, as well as an AIM screen name that members can use to contact you for scene requests or general chat.

  • If you'd like, we'll also give you free_form_ooc access for your personal InsaneJournal, so that you can more easily follow that community (it is friends locked).

  • Using the cast list, add the AIM screen names of our members to your buddy list, so that you'll know when people are online. That cast list also specifies which characters each writer controls, and the 'PBs' (celebrity likenesses) for each.

  • You may begin posting for your character in free_form2 as soon as you feel familiar with our guidelines. If you'd like to request a scene with another writer, you can do so in several ways. Many writers feel comfortable sending IMs to request scenes. Others prefer email. The most common method is by posting a 'scene request list' in free_form_ooc, to let people know which pair of characters you'd like to write together.

  • It is critical to keep up with the out-of-character community, the same way you read along with the in-character community. A lot of Birthright information (including scene requests that might be coming your way) is posted there, and it's a great link for building our community atmosphere!

  • At some point, you may receive a Chat Room request over AIM for a 'social chat'. We like to get together and talk about things other than writing, whenever a bunch of us are online and bored. :) There is absolutely no pressure to participate in those! Some people are more comfortable with it than others, and you might be very busy when the invite arrives.

  • The Birthright Resources page is a very valuable resource for Birthright information.

  • Most of our writers friend free_form2 and free_form_ooc rather than adding all the character journals. Please feel free to do the same, and remember to post your own material in free_form2. Whether or not you choose to also keep it in your character's personal journal is completely up to you!

  • Please put your character's profile (from your application) on their InsaneJournal user info page! It helps other writers recall your character's background information.

Stretching across Nevada, between the neon paradise of Las Vegas and desert town of Searchlight, Birthright offers the perfect setting for good writers seeking a quality world where supernaturally-inclined characters can play.

Rooted in the near-future (2012) of Joss Whedon's 'Slayerverse', Birthright has taken on an epic life of its own, with a primary focus on original characters, although applications are welcome for minor canon characters from the show. If you're looking for somewhere with a wealth of talent and writing, friendly players, themes of light and dark, humour and horror, Birthright could be the perfect home for your characters and ideas. We welcome fans of the series and those new to the genre.

The term 'RPG' can be a bit misleading. We are not a tabletop roleplaying game. Birthright exists entirely on-line. Really we're just a group of writers who get bored of doing solo fan-fiction and want to write together instead. :) We've stolen (with love) the Whedon's creative vision, but have branched out in a new direction.

Our forum was created on July 10th, 2004. Since then, we have written thousands of in-character posts, making Birthright one of the largest, most active RPGs on InsaneJournal. The RPG format consists of both solo and tag-team scenes (using AOL Instant Messenger) posted to the main forum, although comment threading is allowed when difficult scheduling persists. Because there is sometimes graphic content, you must be at least 17 to write with us. all such content behind labeled cut-tags.

Our story is set in the 2012 world of Searchlight and Las Vegas, Nevada, where an entity known as the Exile is primarily responsible for bringing our characters to the area. The Exile is a catalyst who propels the game forward, running in the background of more active, character-focused storylines which our writers create. We encourage both individual and group plots.

Our Slayerverse Past...

Writers are not required to be avid viewers of the show(s), although are expected to abide by the established rules. For example, if a writer wants to apply for a vampire, they need to research what being a vampire means (skills and limitations) in this genre. A multoitude of resourceful links can be found on the relevant section of this site.

Birthright is not an AU (Alternate Universe). It takes place several years after the close of both television shows. Because a few loose ends were left open, we have come up with a vague description of what we think happened to those characters.

After the collapse of Sunnydale, Buffy, Dawn, and Andrew headed for Italy. Willow, Kennedy and Xander traveled, hoping to locate Slayers. Giles and the few remaining Watchers worked to rebuild the Council. As for the former members of Angel Investigations, a group of Council-led Slayers intervened in the demonic uprising. It is known that both Spike and Illyria survived. Gunn is widely believed to have died, but no definitive account has yet been revealed. In the midst of battle, the Powers That Be removed Angel and made him the new guardian of Old Ones in the Deeper Well.

Spike, Lorne, Faith, Oz and Connor have all reappeared in Birthright.

Over the next few years, the line between good and evil became blurred. Hundreds of Slayers had been called into a world without a cohesive Watchers' Council to guide the way. A major Hellmouth had been closed and the Circle of the Black Thorn destroyed. Unlikely alliances were made between demons, witches, Watchers, Slayers, and other humans. Both light and dark forces were scattered and an increasing number of 'grey area' players arose.

What Is The Exile?

Archaeological evidence tells us that pockets of human civilization have existed in the American South-West since 12,000 BC. The region which would become Searchlight, Nevada, was no different. Among the first to cross the mountains and deserts were nomadic tribes, some of which flourished briefly before disappearing from archaeological record, leaving behind only vague impressions of their world. After the nomads came the settling tribes - the Paiutes and Washoes numbering among them. Hundreds of years later, Europeans came for land and stayed for mining. At times a bustling community, at others a ghost town, Searchlight has always been a place of periodic population explosion and purging. The latter has almost always been accomplished through violence.

Until recently, it was unknown to all but the loftiest forces of Good and Evil that there is a reason for Searchlight's violent history. A great power exists within that land. Called the Exile, it is is an ambiguous entity with allegiance only to itself. A mystery at times, the Exile has always been a force deserving respect and something more - containment. For thousands of years, it has been locked in the desert; its prison a dimensional rift. The key to the Exile's eventual freedom is not magic, but the absorption of energy released in acts of violence, lust, chaos and death.

Throughout the ages, the Exile has acted as a beacon, sending subconscious signals to humans and more, drawing them close for inevitable confrontations culminating in slaughter and feeding off the energy released. Each time, the goal was to harness enough energy to free itself. Every previous attempt to corral enough energy has failed.

In the summer of 2008, efforts were begun anew, this time with an entirely different target. What better source of energy than a slow-building battle between the supernatural light and dark? As their battle builds, so does the strength of the Exile's 'beacon', calling players from farther corners of the earth and of more significant power. It also has a small following of demons, whose underground stronghold protects the Exile and its prison from disruption.

The Exile's allegiances to good and evil, as well as its own end-game, are unknown. Until recently, its efforts have been largely ignored by the higher order of good and evil, who practice an unspoken policy of non-interference, because the Exile's freedom could cause an upset in the delicate balance of power. But this newest advancement has garnered attention because it has the potential to succeed. If the Exile is permanently released, the delicate balance between good and evil will be disrupted.

On the Winter Solstice of 2010, a battle broke out in the city of sin. A tear between universes had been opened by a scientist at Wolfram and Hart, allowing traffic between our world and a decimated version of it, in which the Old Ones had taken control. The tear eventually became unstable and began to envelop the city. During the fight to keep our world from being destroyed, enough energy was generated to allow the Exile a temporary release. Without warning, and without known motives, the entity surfaced in Las Vegas and stabilised the tear. Once the chaos stopped and, thus, the fuel for its temporary freedom, the Exile was returned to its mystical prison. Its small army fought to kill off the remainder of the demons left by the tear.

The everyday warriors on both sides of the ancient struggle are now aware that an entity exists; they have no understanding that it is their on-going battle which feeds the Exile, whatever the consequences may be.

If You're Appling For Original Characters

By intentional design, the majority of Birthright's characters are originals. We welcome applications for originals at any time.

There are few limitations to the type of original character you may apply for. If it's well-written and grabs the interest of the moderating team, there is a good possibility your character will be approved, unless it seems too similar to an existing one. Anticipate that the moderators might want to fine-tune profile or character details with you. Here are a few ideas of what we might like to see in an application (by no means a complete list):

Males characters, villains, Watchers, civilians, Slayers needing training, warlocks, telekinetics, ghosts and spirits, demons, shape-shifters, empaths, cybernetics, touch-tells, Wolfram and Hart employees, military or intelligence. The type can be new to the established Slayerverse, so long as it doesn't contradict it. Feel free to be creative!

Helpful hint... Balance your character's strengths with weaknesses.

Applications for full-time, original characters with pre-existing connections to characters in the community will be considered on a case-by-case basis (for example, the sibling of a present character). It may be allowed if the connection is not a 'cornerstone' of the character profile, but will not be considered if the character is specifically designed to interact with one other, as this can lead to 'bubbling', or only interacting with one member of the cast.

If You're Applying For Canonical Characters

'Canon' characters are those which were created on either of the television series or published literature (for instance, the Scooby Gang or members of Angel Investigations).

Our community maintains a deliberately high 'original to canon' character balance. Applications for canon characters will be considered sparingly (to avoid typical power structures). Canons must be prepared to interact with a predominantly original cast.

Examples of who we might approve include Gunn, Andrew, Dawn, Amy, Harmony, Wood, Hamilton, Lilah, Xander and other minor non-Scoobies (Clem, Marcy, Vi, slayer-In-Training, etcetera). Feel free to pitch an idea our way.

Canons we probably won't accept right now include Buffy, Willow, Kennedy, Giles, Angel, Anya, Fred and generally the dead ones, unless the reasoning is cool or someone had the means to pull it off. You are welcome to try and convince us!

It is expected that canon characters will experience character development beyond what was written on television. However, while creative freedom is embraced in this game, a canon should not be portrayed as acting in a manner beyond reasonable expectations for that character.

Canon characters were instrumental, powerful and central to the plots of Sunnydale and Los Angeles. In Birthright, the playing field is even. There are no positions of seniority, other than the respect a writer earns for a character.

*At its height as a Boom Town (gold mining), the population reached nearly 2,000 people, but it became a ghost town of 50 residents in the 1920s. The population is now around 600-800.

*It's under the jurisdiction of the Las Vegas police, but the travel time renders them somewhat useless. There are only 2 officers designated to work in Searchlight full time.

*The population consists of a mixture of ranchers, miners (Quartette Mining Co.), and artists.

*Elevation: 3,540 feet above sea level.

*It was once connected by railroad to the Santa Fe line, but a severe washout destroyed the railroad and it was never repaired.

The purpose of this is to provide inspiration for geographical locations and possibly situations for fictional story ideas. The sources for this, so far, go up to 2004 and, therefore, may no longer be relevant by the time of 2010, but are fairly recent, as of this time.

It should be noted, however, that these are 'real' venues. Others have been noted by characters on this forum (Victoria has mentioned 'Dinosaur World' and 'Cafe 80s' being in close proximity to one another), but those would be purely in the realm of the game. This guide focuses on what is actually known about Las Vegas and is meant to show there are a lot more options for characters to travel, than simply bars and gambling casinos, although those are fun, too!

Remember, Las Vegas prides itself on being an entertainment capital of the world. There is an immense variety of things to do and Las Vegas Boulevard South (more popularly known as 'the Strip') is not the only place to visit. This is a very long street which goes from South, turns slightly, right in the middle, then leads off to the North-East. The majority of the famous hotels and attractions are along it, but what's known as 'Downtown' is where the famous neon signs of the casino cowgirl and cowboy are located (seen in just about every film to do with that area), along a place known as the 'Freemont Drive Experience'.

Downtown would be located to the North of central Las Vegas.
